My Record on Public Safety

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools will receive $4.6 million from the county to improve safety and security at every school. In 2018, I held an important town hall "SAFETY in OUR SCHOOLS" with panelists CMPD Chief Kerr Putney; Dr. Clayton Wilcox, CMS Superintendent; and Margaret Marshall, CMS Board Member. We addressed how the funding will be used. Attendees also learned how they can take steps to recognize school violence before it happens and help someone in need.

I supported an increase in pay for our firefighters, police officers and all our city employees to better align with other cities. It is crucial that Charlotte take care of those working diligently - often putting their lives on the line - to protect Charlotte. Behind the scenes, so many of our city employees do much of the heavy lifting to "keep the trains running" and ensure our city continues to be safe, sustainable and viable for economic development.

I introduced a healthcare sliding scale for premiums based on wages program. City employees making less than $55,000 will soon be able to afford our healthcare premiums which include many of our Charlotte Water, City of Charlotte Solid Waste, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police, and Charlotte Firefighters. My motion to include this in our 2019 budget was unanimously approved by my colleagues.

I am an advocate for common sense gun regulations.
